Where they're found

In tropical montane cloud forests (a rare type of evergreen mountain forest) around 3000 metres above sea level, in the Central Andes of Colombia.

Survival threats

It has suffered considerable habitat loss and fragmentation, particularly of the wax palm where this parrot nests and eats its fruit.

Conservation status

It’s been classified as 'critically endangered' since 1994 on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species - meaning it is at extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.

Conservation action

The traditional roost-site in Ecuador (where this parrot is now extinct) has recently been purchased and reforested.
