Threatened by the fragmentation of its tropical rainforest habitat.

In 2004, it was placed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species with a 'vulnerable' status - meaning it faces a high risk of extinction in the wild.
Conservation action
In 1997 the National Aquarium in Baltimore, in the USA, initiated a captive-breeding program within the Sipaliwini Protected Area, which has been very successful and now involves more than 20 other institutions.
